This study aims to research the relationship between ego-state and career decision, career barriers of
4-year-college students in Seoul and Chungcheongnam-do, Korea, and the result of the study will be used as
preliminary data for consulting college students who claim to have both personality and career problems. The
Ego-state which is the structural functional concept of Transactional Analysis originated by Eric Berne supposes
that an individual has the Ego-state divided into parents, adult and child. Meanwhile, career decision status is
the concept in the spectrum from career undecided to decided, and it has already turned out that college
students who cannot decide a career are more in troubles. The career barriers mean situations or factors that
have negative effects to career decision, goal, aspiration and motive and so on in the process of performing
several experiences related to career and reflect the environmental context among the variable related to career.
The result of research on the effect of ego-state in the process of career decision is summerized as follows: the
result from correlation analysis, the adult-ego in the ego-state showed significant positive correlation to career
status while the adaptive child ego showed significant negative correlation. While all of the ego-state showed
significant correlation except the child free from career barriers, critical parents ego, nurtural parents ego and
adult ego showed negative correlation and adaptive child ego showed positive correlation. Analyzing the result
with stepwise regression analysis, it was observed that only adaptive child ego is a variable that predicts
ego-decision status, and the stronger the adaptive child ego is, the lower the career decision status is. However
the accuracy was as low as 8.5%. As the variables which predict career barriers in ego-state are adult ego and
adaptive child ego, adult ego unilaterally explain career barriers as 19.4% ,if adaptive child ego is added, as
22.9%. In conclusion, despite the limitation of the study, we verified that ego-state of college students can
help not only understanding the personal characteristics, but also identifying the possibilities available in
consulting and developing career.
